| BTW, we decided on Boxing Day that in honour of the legendary Benidrom cabaret act Vicky Leyton, that Vickery's nickname should be Sticky.
Or Stickery.

| Quote Rogues Gallery="Rogues Gallery"Vigo scored three great tries that day, all on the video.
He should have been a great winger but sadly fell into bad company (some of those were in the Wigan team
) who showed him the wrong way to be a pro player. It's sad really because the "Vigo" type of player in the correct environment would be box office today.'"

| I was comparing Atkinson to other Leeds wingers Rogues.
I also dispute that Atkinson would not get into any SL team these days.
I would say he would walk into most teams if he was playing in 2013.
Hall is the complete winger both in strength and pace. Just saying I wish he had a bit more pace that`s all.
Charnley for me would be a good right winger and is still behind Hall in the pecking order.

In big internationals I'd play Hardaker on the wing, just as Australia do with Jarryd Hayne. Briscoe and Charnley are both good players and we're better off for wings than we have been for some time (Hall is obviously England's #1 winger), but, like Hayne, Hardaker's ability demands selection.

| Make your mind Rogues... He's either the best winger in Super League or he's better being played at centre..... You choose.

| Quote lionarmour87="lionarmour87"Over all throughout both careers John Atkinson was far and away a better winger than Vigo.that particular game on Atky was at the backend of his career and he came straight off nightshift in the heavy mob,IMO he was also better than Offiah'"
John Atkinson was a brilliant winger in his day - although no Lee Penny - classic G1.
Those days were pretty different generally as was the game and in particular player preparation or rather the lack of preparation. John Atkinson retired from rugby after that Vigo inspired John Player defeat to Wigan as he finally conceded his police career was preventing him maintaining his previous standards. Fortunately for Leeds that decision was reversed for a time shortly after following a change in shift patterns and he managed to eek a little longer out of his excellent career - probably long enough to see off the South African's short-lived Wigan career befor spells with Swinton and Oldham (?)
Give the ball to 'Atky' in space anywhere on the pitch and it was a virtual guarantee of three points - ask him to put his body on the line in defence though and the reverse was almost as true. A flailing high shot being typical fare.

A few years before that game there was a leeds wigan game at Headingley and Stuart Wright got in the clear and a wigan fan confidently shouted out"you wont catch him, you wont catch him"he didnt manage to shout a 3rd time before Atky cought him

I think he's the best winger in Super League, but he would also be a very good centre, and with the likes of Burgess coming through the ranks it could happen (Burgess will probably be Pat Richards replacement in the long term)
Some of your older and more respectful members may remember the greatest player of all scoring two 75 yarders at Headingley in a cup tie 1957. He was great winger who also played at centre and stand off in major finals.
Take a bow Billy Boston.
And no, I don't think Charnley or Hall are anywhere near that class.

Yes I was at that game too and saw those trie's.I remember most of all after the game Billy Boston come across from his wing to shake hands with a young 17 year old Delmos Hodgkinson.I was just turned 10 years old and the crowd was so large they moved us kids from the old dressing room corner to sit on the straw in front of the southstand. When I think of that game I wish I could have been a bit older so I could appreciate and remember more about it.I enjoyed reading that thread about the 50 odd years ago games on yours.I would have made a few contributions, but your resident Gauliter wont let me on
