What's that got to do with a comparison with SM? Was SM in the running for the Saints job?

Come on! He couldn't even get an assistant coach job in Oz, otherwise he'd have gone. It clearly (if we are to believe his statments) was his plan to go to the NRL in some capacity and it ain't happened for him and the dulls job is a consolation job for him. The guys got to work somewhere.
The dulls board seem to share your view of the guy. It's not my view but the dulls fans seem happy enough.

It's nothing to do the the comparison with SM - that was an earlier post on this thread.

. . . in direct response to me rubbishing your comparison, yes.
The thing is, I think a lot of Saints fans would agree that Potter is comparable to McNamara, which is why we have some of the biggest spanner fans in RL (as well as some of the most reasonable). IMO of course.

How do you know that? How many assistant managers jobs are their currently available in Aus? He wanted to go back, he didn't get a job offer so took the Bradford job, so? Nobody thinks he's the next Wayne Bennett, but to rate him as slightly better than McNamara is ridiculous.

And? Do you think our next coach, whoever he is, would be taking the job if he'd been offered a head coaching role in the NRL?

He'll be a far better coach for them than McNamara was, they've suffered a coach as bad as him, you haven't for a long while. Maybe that should tell you something.

| Quote Offside Monkey="Offside Monkey"Mick's been good for us. I don't hold at all with the Potter bashers.
Not perfect mind, I'd class our loss to Hudds in the CC semi as a low point, they really bashed us off the park.
High points centre around our various victories against Leeds, the premier rivals during his tenure, especially in the cup and away at Headingly. We've played some excellent rugby, no matter what the moaners say. Obviously he goes away with 2 CC medals
Had a couple of his results been on different days, we'd be hailing him as the greatest coach since Daniel Anderson.'"
I reckon he's done OK, his original brief by the saints board if you remember was to bring young players through as we go through the phase of losing our legendary players.
The problem is he has had to do it too soon, with dissruption to the team due to injuries instead of bringing in 2 players at a time.
He's not a charismatic person which means the saints fans can,t connect with him. Yet if he gets us to a couple of grand finals and a challenge cup finals during his time with us, would this mean he is a successful coach in the eyes of opposition fans.

You perhaps need to include our board as spanners as well as they weren't impressed enough to offer a new contract to MP.
I've never been a fan to be honest and I know it will probably come back bite me e.g. he does a brilliant job at the dulls and we get an even worse coach, but I can't help not liking him.
He's the john major of RL.

| To be fair, i do remember reading one article with a quote from Potter saying that "this opportunity might not be there in the future", which does indicate that there was an offer of some form within the NRL and he was very interested in exploring that further.
I wish him well, i think he will be good for the Bulls.

I don't remember a club press release comparing him to SM, so not sure how that is relevant to my point.

Fair enough - one thing he isn't, though, is the Steve McNamara of coaching.

Yep, in '97/'98 voters were all wowed by a young MP called Tony Blair who had "personality" instead of boring John Major. 12 years later and he's run down the country and economy, jumped ship and left his hapless junior to carry the can.
If you want a coach like that, give Brian Noble a ring. I guess that makes Steve Mc the Gordon Brown of RL .

You never saw splitting image then? My comparison was of the caricature not their respective achievments.
I don't quite see the Nobby / Blair comparison!
