| That's terrible news!
I hope something can be done. Possibly with RFL involvement...

| Always enjoyed popping in for a pint when (deliberately) changing trains at Huddersfield en route to our Thursday away games in Yorkshire. Could spend hours looking at the stuff on the walls.

indeed, that really is an 'iconic' rugby league building that we need to keep open.

| People aren't seriously suggesting that the RFL should buy a business that even experienced business recovery professionals haven't been able to make work - are they?
It's a shame given the history of the place and for those who have lost their jobs, but presumably alternative premises can be found for the Heritage Centre element if The George is unable to re-open?

I wonder how feasible it would be to move the RFL from Red Hall to the George. Keep the ground floor as it is, conference facilities upstairs and above that office space. Any floors not used could be converted and rented out as office space. Though I must admit that is all pie in the sky, wishful thinking.

| Maybe with a bit of planning they coulld buy the building
and move their H.Q. there in time. What better place for
the governing body of the sport that was born there to be based.

| my guess is that the only option left for the George is apartments. In making the apartments it would be quite feasable to just keep the bar as a bar.

| It's a shame for all the history in the place and more of a shame for the current ecconomic climate.
The finances in RL are positively brimming, compared to the state of the country at the moment

| Damn, me and the wife had booked a fortnight's holiday there with the kids in February. Looks like it'll just have to be Florida again.

| Seriously ... if this bothers you, you really need to move on. I couldn't care less about Odsal, The George Hotel, and nor (as a Wigan fan) even Central Park. Five minutes of 'that's kind of emotional since I had a lot of good times there' and then MOVE ON.

Shall we build a warehouse on Stone Henge whilst we are at it? Historical landmarks, buildings and monuments are part of our nation's unique and wonderful heritage. The George Hotel represents a key moment in British sports history. Perplexed as to why any sports fan would have such feelings.

But it makes little sense for the RFL to throw money at what, given the evidence from two business recovery agencies, seems to be a lost cause. Quite frankly, I'm not that surprised that they haven't been able to find too many people willing to spend £100+ a night to kip next to Huddersfield station.
For sure, it is a huge shame given the role it played in the sport that I know and love, but mourning it's closure isn't going to do anybody any good.
