It's generally accepted that defences and fitness levels today are a lot stronger than they once were due to SL going professional, the introduction of 4 subs and technological improvements to aide training regimes, game analysis etc. When I look back at games from the 80's and early 90's it looks like a different sport at times. Point being you can't accurately compare scrum halves from two different eras. Long was the best british scrum half by a mile for at least a decade and I think he still would be now if age, injuries and a dodgy lifestyle hadn't caught up with him.
