| Those of you with knowledge of stadium building - what is a reasonable time to go from this 'declaration of intent' to actually building a stadium?

Not sure I'm comfortable with the direction the thread has gone since - but then again, this is RLFans!

| last week in the pub I had a discussion from one of those people who claims to know everything about everything (no he doesn't post on here!!!)
he was claiming that any build on the old pit site would require an exercise of removing gases from the old shafts and for them to be filled in and thatt his would take 3-5 years alone. I know nothing of these matters other than I wouldn't expect Sir Rodney, Brian Nicholson and David Hinchcliffe to get tripped up by sucha basic and obvious matter. Does anyone know any of the facts and detail. Obviously many other colliery sites now have other uses. Has the Stanley site been filled in??

I am told that the remedials were done around 10 years ago. I didn't ask specifics, but no-one seems to think that this is an issue and therefore I assume that the developer is fully up to speed on the matter!

I know that usually a shaft is not fully filled but is plugged well down, wouldn't think there would be a need to undo this to allow gas out, and the position of the shaft will be known so doubt they will build directly over it

I'm afraid they are talking rubbish. The gas is methane and its lighter than air so will naturally vent away and the groundwater rebound from when pumping stopped at the pit would also assist in forcing the gas out. If the shaft contained excessive gas then the Coal Authority would have vented the gas and if necessary flared it.
Its unlikely that there will be any gas because if there was any in the shaft and the old workings someone would have tapped into it and burned the methane to generate electricity as has happened on a number of old colliery sites such as Fryston, Glasshoughton and Grimethorpe to name a few.
The former colliery was that I believe, just a colliery so will not be contaminated unlike sites like Glashoughton which also had a Coke Works on it which leaves nasty contaminants which need to be cleaned.
The site will not be a problem, take it from me, I may not know a lot but this is one area I have a bit of knowledge about.
